Ê Starting upÊ - Ê eXoR[Troopers] Ê - Ê12th May 2003
So here’s the first .plan file update. It’ll have a personal touch, unlike from what you’ve seen from me in the rather technical HUD document.

Three more days until The Matrix: Reloaded. I loved the first movie, and watched it over and over again for inspiration for my Bullet Time mutator. I know the quotes by heart and love the fighting scenes with passion. From what I’ve seen in the last trailer, I won’t be disappointed. The special effects work is absolutely amazing and I was absolutely amazed when I heard that the heated burly brawl scene was created in the memory of a PC. Great stuff all around.

Enter The Matrix should be interesting. Although the technology appears to be outdated, the camera work and story line should make it worth playing. I hope there’ll be a demo.

And then there’s E3. I’m really looking forward to hearing what Epic has to say about UT2004 and the mod contest, which they claimed would be announced before the expo. Unreal Engine coverage is always good, and the compo sounds like a great way to ensure a viable Ut2003 modding community.

To please those who came here looking for Troopers info, some technicalities then. We’ve been beta testing Troopers during the past weeks, and it’s coming along very nicely. Most of the code needed for the demo release is done. What’s left is fixing bugs, tweaking some variables and balancing the game. I’ll also have to look into cheat protection sometime soon. The CTF AI could use a makeover, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the hassle yet. Time will tell.

When all that is done, I’m going to spend some time on clientside prediction of our bolts. Since they’re moving so fast, they spawn not too pretty on clients with high pings. I have a few idea’s on how to improve upon that, but with clientside prediction comes prediction inaccuracy. The balance between prediction accuracy and handling prettiness is hard to find. An interesting challenge, though.

There have been some occurrences of weapon problems which concern me a bit. Although I hardly encounter it myself, the bug seems to be very similar to the elusive UT2003 shootbug. I’ll be looking into it in the next couple of days.

Dru is working on the skin of a new gun. He’s doing a great job at skinning it, and the model is a piece of art by Ghost. With a little luck, there’ll be shots of it soon. I’m not going to say which one it is yet, but rest assured that it’ll pack a nice punch.

I’m planning to post again soon. I hope there’s some interesting E3 news to post about by then.
