Troopers: Dawn of Destiny Release 5 - Yoshiro - 16th Nov 2004 13:43
Kinetic Studios is happy to announce the release after many weeks of silence of Troopers: Dawn of Destiny version 5. This new version comes with 3 new maps which are Objective_Hoth, CTF_TatooineCruise and BespinPads. Also included in this release is the introduction of the Imperial All Terrain Scout Transport or AT-ST. Even though all the features we would have liked in this release did not make it, we are happy with what we have and feel it is quite enjoyable in the form. Hope to see you all very soon in a galaxy far far away.
It's sad this thing only got those three servers. The Jolt servers work like a kid in a mine, and FilePlanet, naturally, has to make you wait for 76.345 minutes before you can actually start the download. Estimated time to download: 7 hours and some.
That's bad.
On the other point, the mod looks awesome. Let's blow up some stormies.

Just to wrap up, I really liked those crashed space ships, the industrial junk strewn around, and the attention to detail with the M. Falcon, Tie, X-wing, and shuttle models. I'd like to see some more interactivity with the shuttles and M. Falcon. Also, laser blasts should be able to destroy more objects. On the biz, I'm sure that George Lucas or someone talking with him has seen this, because the quality is superb; production-quality doesn't even come to mind, because it's people who really love the game and are just natural mappers. That being said, I view the release as just a wider beta-test, perhaps as you are shopping this to LucasArts? I really think you should get together with Epic/Atari and maybe offer them a percentage of gross in exchange for licensing rights to the Unreal engine inclusive of the Unreal 3 upgrade rendering engine. But if you were on board solely for the Nvida contest, I hope that you see that your duly authorized derivative work is great advertising for George Lucas, for the other games, and for the newly released DVD trilogy set, and that you'll therefore keep at it.

general recommendations.

There's really a good balance between the detail that can be shown, and what we know about the Lucas mythology. Those Imperial starships have just the right touch of "technobleakness" that I'm sure Mr. Lucas was trying to portray in his movies. Name, that technology is an evil machine, moving indifferently forward, with unfeeling, heartless efficiency. And that evil technology imposes its own faceless values. But that being said, what I'd like to see in the game is more of those black-helmeted administrative types, tending to the computer banks, and clopping around in shiny shoes. And I want a light saber that can cut almost anything in the game, like doors and bulkheads. And I want Darth Vader--I want to try to shoot a laser blast and have it bounce off of his helmet, and then have him use the Force to rip a blaster out of my hand and across the room. And I really missed Yoda in that little cave. I went in the cave expecting to see Yoda, and there wasn't anybody in there, not even a made bed, or a kettle of soup on the fire. I mean, how can you have Star Wars without a light saber or Darth Vader? I also liked the sound of snow crunching under foot in one of the levels, that was nice touch.
atmospherics, critique.
bagel's little smoker - - 24th Nov 2004 22:09
Atmospherics, or the elements that come together to create the Star Wars experience illusion, are top-notch. Atmospherics is in all the details, objects, light, particularly ambient sounds, music, attention to thematic continuity, and adherence to the underlying mythology. All has been done faithfully. I think you've succeeded. When I did an "addbots 10" and a group of stormtroopers were shooting at me, with laser blasts going off all around, I felt like I was in a Star Wars movie. So, keep going in the same direction with atmospherics.
Light, comments.
bagel's little smoker - - 24th Nov 2004 22:03
The people who built this game understand light. They really do. Like when you go to that Jedi-world, there's moving patches of light on the grass, and in that snow-level with the rebel base, when you first enter the base and go down the stairs there are picket-fence shadows on the left wall--nice. Also, I liked the red glow on the snow near the AT-AT "eye light" that was lying on the ground.
Music, critique.
bagel's little smoker - - 24th Nov 2004 21:59
Music is excellent, very atmospheric, dramatic, appropriate, George Lucas-esque. It makes you feel like you're in a movie. Good music is absolutely essential. I like all of it, but there's a little bit of a dramatic back-beat on the star destroyer level. Good work.
sounds, critiques.
bagel's little smoker - - 24th Nov 2004 21:56
Sound FX are great. But I want to hear the storm trooper armor more, when they fall down, when they get hit. Also, when the player gets hit, there are goofy sounds like "oooh" that sounds like a Wookie--now I know that's a coincidence, but get that out of there, because it breaks the illusion you are otherwise so seamlessly creating.
Immediate Recommendations.

Developers--what you should do, right now, is fix those AT-ATs so that they are drivable. Make a patch, no more than 30 megs, and put engines in those puppies. Make them work, and let teams hang out the side doors and shoot at each other in the forest. And I want to hear big laser cannon blasts from those front cannons, and I want to hear screaming, squealing, scrapping metal straining when those monsters receive terminal damage and fall over. The AT-ATs in current release 5.0 are static, they just sit there. They look beautiful, but they don't do anything.
Truly an Excellent Game.
bagel's little smoker - - 24th Nov 2004 21:47
As I indicated before, I am offering a review after having obtained the game. It's excellent.(I hope that my remarks are not auto-truncated, because I have a lot to say). I am going to preface my remarks by letting you know that I will be spreading out my comments across several topic areas, several posts, and about 80 percent of what I have to say about this game is good, and about 20 percent is criticism. That being said (after a most undoubtedly pompous fashion, let the critiques begin--and moderator, feel free to collate/move these comments to a more appropriate area).

Is there a patch? Hope there will be!
Can't get the file
bagel's little smoker - - 21st Nov 2004 05:02
It's just links to links to links, going around in circles. I must have seen your banner ads 100 times; butts in a row, someone whining for surveys, etc. Can't you put the file up at BeyondUnreal fileworks? Where are you guys, out at a pub or something? I even clicked through one of your ads to support you, so make the file available, please.

The screenshots look great. Good attention to detail. If I can get this file, I'll come back and give a review. And that's no ordinary promise from some skunk in the garden, a poser that I am.
